Bengaluru Bravehearts Triumph in Rugby Premier League with 35-10 Victory
Bengaluru Bravehearts Secure First Win in RPL
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 17: Following a draw in their inaugural match of the Rugby Premier League (RPL), the Bengaluru Bravehearts made a strong comeback, achieving a decisive 35-10 victory against the Kalinga Black Tigers, marking their first win in the tournament.
Mohit Khatri, who was named man of the match and is regarded as one of India's top players, shared insights about the atmosphere in the locker room, his experiences competing against his brothers, and the significant influence the RPL is poised to have on Indian rugby.
"While our first match ended in a draw, we are thrilled with our win in the second. We hope to maintain this winning streak. The energy is fantastic, and the team is uniting well," Mohit expressed joyfully after the impressive victory.
The RPL is a groundbreaking franchise-based rugby league that brings together elite players from around the globe. Khatri, an experienced international player, finds immense value in playing alongside foreign professionals. "It has been an incredible experience. I've gained so much knowledge from the international players in a short time; it's hard to put into words. We are gradually learning what it means to compete at a world-class level. Each match and interaction elevates our game," he remarked.
He praised the foreign players for their humility, stating, "They are very approachable. Whenever we seek their guidance, they are eager to help, motivate us, and celebrate our small achievements. The overall environment is supportive and positive."
Mohit is not the only Khatri participating in the GMR RPL; his brothers, Prince Khatri and Neeraj Khatri, are also competing for the Hyderabad Heroes and the Mumbai Dreamers, respectively. The trio began their rugby journey together in Haryana, introduced to the sport by their eldest brother, former Indian rugby captain Vikas Khatri.
"As kids, we played sports like football and cricket. One day, our elder brother Vikas encouraged us to try something different and introduced us to rugby," Mohit reminisced. "We have always played together, but now we are opponents; it feels like exam time. I’m eager to see how much I’ve learned from them over the years," he added.
As this is the inaugural season, the RPL has included a maximum of 30 Indian players, but Mohit believes that as the league gains popularity, this number will significantly rise. He noted, "Many Indian players have reached out to me. The sport is still developing, but this league will change that. As the GMR RPL gains recognition, more children will be inspired. Next year, we might see 50 or 60 Indian players. We are committed to increasing that number."
In closing, Mohit extended a heartfelt invitation to the community, saying, "If there are kids in your neighborhood or anyone interested in trying a new sport, our game is open to all. Come play, watch our league, and support us as much as you can."
