Ben Stokes' Comeback Delayed Following Surgery
Stokes' Recovery Timeline Extended
Ben Stokes, the captain of England's Test cricket team, was initially anticipated to make his return to competitive play by early next month. However, it now seems that his recovery will take longer than expected.
Earlier this year in February, Stokes sustained a facial injury while practicing in the nets, resulting in a broken cheekbone that required surgical intervention. Since the conclusion of the Ashes series in Australia, he has been absent from international cricket. Additionally, he faced a groin injury during the last Test of the Ashes. Although there were hopes for a quicker return with his county team, Durham, he is now likely to miss several weeks of cricket, with a comeback projected for May.
Coach Discusses Stokes' Injury and Recovery
During a pre-season media event for Durham, coach Ryan Campbell provided updates on Stokes' situation. "He was set to play in the first match. He has been training diligently, but we must wait for the specialists to give their approval," Campbell stated.
He expressed relief that Stokes' injury wasn't more severe, noting, "The incident could have been much worse than it appears. The ball was struck with great force, and we are fortunate he avoided a more serious injury. Just a few centimeters in a different direction could have resulted in a significant eye injury."
Stokes' Determination Post-Ashes Defeat
Recently, Stokes took to social media to reaffirm his dedication to English cricket. Campbell remarked that the 4-1 defeat in the Ashes series has intensified Stokes' desire for success.
"He has much to prove. It's clear that the Ashes didn't go as planned. Stokes is a proud individual who aspires for England to be the top team globally. The Ashes loss hit him hard, but he has taken time to regroup. It's thrilling for England to witness the effort he is putting in to prepare, as he is a remarkable player," Campbell concluded.
England's next Test match is scheduled against New Zealand, commencing on June 4 at Lord's.
