Bellingham Celebrates England's Resilience in World Cup Victory Over Norway
Bellingham Praises Team Spirit
Jude Bellingham, the England midfielder, commended his teammates for their unwavering spirit and determination after the Three Lions triumphed over Norway with a score of 2-1 in extra time, securing a spot in the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Bellingham, who netted both goals for England and earned the Player of the Match title, acknowledged the collective effort of the squad in achieving this hard-fought win.
Character and Perseverance on Display
"Every player put in a tremendous effort. I want to express my gratitude to those who contributed significantly once again. It's all about character and perseverance. Even when we faced challenges, we managed to find a way to clinch the victory, whether in 90 minutes or 120. We give our all," Bellingham stated during his post-match interview with a media outlet.
He also highlighted the contributions of England's substitutes, emphasizing that every player played a role in the team's success. "Those who were ready to step in did so and performed excellently. I am incredibly proud of this team for reaching another World Cup semi-final," he added.
Thrilling Comeback Secures Semifinal Spot
In the match, Bellingham scored twice as England rallied from behind to defeat Norway in extra time. The Real Madrid midfielder equalized late in the first half before scoring the winning goal in extra time, leading Thomas Tuchel's team to a 2-1 comeback victory.
Norway started strong, taking the lead in the 36th minute with a goal from Andreas Schjelderup, who finished expertly after Erling Haaland had tested England's goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, with a header.
Just before halftime, England responded when Bellingham surged forward and calmly slotted in the equalizer. Harry Kane seemed to have given England the lead shortly after, but his goal was disallowed for offside.
Norway thought they had regained the lead before the hour mark when Torbjorn Heggem scored, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review penalized Haaland for a foul on Elliot Anderson during the buildup. Norway continued to threaten, with Kristoffer Ajer hitting the crossbar, while England also came close through Djed Spence after a mistake by goalkeeper Orjan Nyland.
With no winner in regular time, the match proceeded to extra time. Bellingham made the difference, reacting quickly after Nyland spilled a powerful shot from substitute Morgan Rogers, scoring from close range to send England into the semifinals.
Looking Ahead
England will now face either the reigning champions Argentina or Switzerland in the semifinals at Atlanta Stadium on July 15. Bellingham was named Player of the Match, and he, along with captain Harry Kane, has now scored six goals each in the 2026 World Cup, marking a historic achievement as the first time two England players have scored at least five goals in a single tournament.
Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford also reached a significant milestone, making his 18th FIFA World Cup appearance, thus becoming England's most-capped goalkeeper in World Cup history, surpassing Peter Shilton's previous record of 17 matches.
Norway's Remarkable Journey
For Norway, this defeat concluded a remarkable campaign that saw them reach the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals for the first time. Their previous best performances included Round of 16 finishes in 1938 and 1998, along with a group-stage appearance in the 1994 World Cup.
