Seattle, July 2: In a stunning turn of events, Belgium pulled off a remarkable comeback against Senegal, overcoming a 2-0 deficit with just five minutes remaining in their FIFA World Cup 2026 match at Seattle Stadium, securing their spot in the Round of 16.

As the match approached the 85-minute mark, Belgium seemed to be on the brink of elimination. However, a goal from Romelu Lukaku reignited their hopes, followed by a header from Youri Tielemans that brought the score level.

With penalties looming as the game neared extra time, the drama intensified. A VAR review awarded Belgium a penalty, which Tielemans successfully converted, igniting jubilant celebrations among the fans.

This marks the second occasion Belgium has overturned a two-goal deficit in a World Cup knockout match, the first being their memorable 3-2 win over Japan in the 2018 tournament.

Senegal started strong, taking the lead in the 26th minute when Habib Diarra capitalized on a rebound after a header hit the post. Despite several attempts, including a long-range shot from Maxim De Cuyper, Belgium could not equalize before halftime.

Belgium's head coach Rudi Garcia brought on Romelu Lukaku at the beginning of the second half, but Senegal quickly extended their lead with a goal from Ismaila Sarr, leaving Belgium in a challenging position. Nevertheless, they refused to surrender. In the 86th minute, Lukaku scored from a Thomas Meunier cross, narrowing the gap. Just three minutes later, Tielemans scored again, heading in a cross from Leandro Trossard to equalize and push the match into extra time.

As the game appeared destined for penalties, more excitement unfolded when Tielemans was fouled in the box, leading to a penalty kick that he converted after a VAR check.

Senegal had one last chance from a free-kick, but it was unsuccessful. When the final whistle blew, the Red Devils celebrated their unforgettable comeback.

Belgium will stay in Seattle for their Round of 16 match on July 6, where they will face either the USA or Bosnia and Herzegovina.
