In light of escalating tensions at the India-Pakistan border, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made a pivotal decision. Reports indicate that India will not take part in the Asia Cup set for September this year. An official statement is anticipated shortly, as the BCCI has already notified the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) regarding its choice.

Furthermore, the Indian cricket team will also forgo participation in the Women’s Emerging Asia Cup, which is scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka next year. The ACC is currently led by Mohsin Naqvi, who also holds the position of President of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

This decision by the BCCI is perceived as a strong reaction to Pakistan. A senior official from the board stated, “This move is part of a larger strategy to isolate Pakistan cricket. We have already communicated our withdrawal from the upcoming Women’s Emerging Asia Cup and have decided to halt future collaborations with them. We are in constant communication with the ACC regarding this issue.”

Can the Asia Cup Happen Without India?

The BCCI recognizes that organizing a successful Asia Cup without India's involvement will be a significant hurdle. The tournament is slated to be hosted in India this September, but its future now appears uncertain. Typically, the Asia Cup includes teams from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. Given that a substantial portion of cricket's sponsorship and commercial interest is derived from India, Team India's absence could severely impact the tournament's attractiveness and financial viability.

In 2023, the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan had already affected the Asia Cup, with India opting not to travel to Pakistan and instead playing all its matches in Sri Lanka. This edition was disappointing for Pakistan, as they did not reach the final, while India ultimately claimed the trophy after defeating Sri Lanka.
