BCCI Cracks Down on Smart Sunglasses in IPL: What You Need to Know
BCCI's New Restrictions on Smart Sunglasses
New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has implemented a ban on the use of smart sunglasses by players and match officials during the current IPL season. This decision stems from concerns over the devices' sophisticated communication capabilities, which enable live streaming and video calls via mobile data or Wi-Fi.
In a notice sent to the franchises participating in the league, the BCCI's Anti-Corruption Unit (ACSU) highlighted that certain companies have been promoting and selling these smart sunglasses to players and their support teams.
The advisory stated, "Please be aware that these gadgets come with advanced features such as live streaming, text messaging, and audio/video calling through mobile networks or Wi-Fi."
The BCCI further classified these smart glasses as both an 'Audio/Video Recording Device' and a 'Communication Device' under the PMOA Minimum Standards.
The Board emphasized, "The possession and/or use of 'Smart Goggles' is strictly forbidden in the Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA)."
Players are not allowed to use any communication devices in the designated PMOAs during this IPL season. Recently, Rajasthan Royals' Romi Bhinder faced a fine of Rs one lakh and received a warning after being filmed using a phone in the dugout.
In its latest communication, the BCCI urged all players and officials to surrender their smart sunglasses before entering the PMOA and warned of consequences for non-compliance.
The Board stated, "All players and support staff must hand over such devices to the Security Liaison Officer (SLO), along with their mobile phones and smartwatches, upon entering the PMOA on match days."
It added, "Failure to deposit these devices will be considered a violation of PMOA protocols and may lead to penalties under the PMOA Minimum Standards for IPL 2026."
This year's IPL has faced several incidents of code of conduct breaches, prompting the BCCI to enforce strict regulations, including a ban on late-night outings for players without prior approval from the security team.
Additionally, the Board has prohibited guests from entering the hotel rooms of players and support staff due to security risks and concerns regarding honey-trapping.
