Jakarta, June 3: The journey of Indian badminton stars Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty at the Indonesia Open concluded prematurely in the first round of men's doubles, primarily due to Satwik's ongoing right shoulder discomfort.
The world-ranked fourth duo was behind 6-11 in the initial game against Malaysian opponents Kang Khai Xing and Aaron Tai when Satwik indicated his shoulder pain, which has been a persistent issue, leading to their decision to concede the match on Wednesday.
In an official statement, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) confirmed, "Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have withdrawn from the Indonesia Open 2026 due to the former’s injury. The pair will now focus on recovery and rehabilitation as they prepare for the important tournaments ahead. We wish Satwik a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing the duo back on court soon."
This recurring shoulder problem had previously forced the pair to withdraw from the Badminton Asia Championship earlier this year.
Just last week, they made headlines by coming from behind to defeat the Indonesian duo of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, winning 18-21, 21-17, 21-16, and marking a historic victory as the first Indian men's pair to clinch the Singapore Open title.
In other news, the mixed doubles team of Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Gadde had a strong start at the BWF Super 1000 event, overcoming the world No. 20 pair from Taipei, Yang Po-Hsuan and Hu Ling Fang, to advance to the next round.
On Tuesday, world No. 10 Lakshya Sen faced an early exit after losing his first-round match to Indonesia's Alwi Farhan, while two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, who recently re-entered the top 10 for the first time since October 2023, triumphed over Thailand’s world No. 19 Busanan Ongbamrungphan in her opening match.
In men's doubles, Indian players Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun achieved an upset by defeating Malaysia’s Tan Wee Kiong, a silver medallist from the Rio 2016 Olympics, along with Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub in the first round.
