PV Sindhu Advances in Indonesia Open with Strong Performance
Sindhu's Impressive Start at the Indonesia Open
Indian badminton star PV Sindhu kicked off her Indonesia Open journey with a determined victory over Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan, winning 25-23, 21-16. This match, part of the prestigious Super 1000 event held at Istora Senayan in Jakarta on June 2, marked Sindhu's entry into the pre-quarterfinals. With this win, she has now dominated their head-to-head encounters, boasting a remarkable 21-1 record against Busanan. The two athletes, who have been rivals since their teenage years, first faced each other at the Badminton Asia Youth U19 Championships in 2012. The only time Busanan managed to defeat Sindhu was during the Hong Kong Open in 2019, where she won in straight games.
After a quarterfinal finish in her previous tournament, Sindhu faced a tough challenge from Busanan, who kept the match competitive. The game was characterized by intense rallies and neither player could establish a significant lead. At one point, Busanan nearly turned the tide in her favor, but Sindhu maintained her composure, clinching the first game 25-23. Following this hard-fought victory, Busanan smiled wryly as Sindhu celebrated with her signature fist pump.
Gaining confidence from her initial win, the two-time Olympic medalist shifted to a more aggressive style, showcasing her swift court coverage. Despite Busanan's experience and tenacity, Sindhu managed to secure the second game 21-16, thus progressing to the next round of this high-profile event.
Looking ahead, Sindhu may face a rematch against South Korea's An Se Young, who recently defeated her in the quarterfinals of the Singapore Open Super 750. An, currently ranked World No. 3, has never lost to Sindhu and is riding a nine-match winning streak. She had a straightforward opening round, defeating Turkey's Neslihan Arin.
Other Matches and Results
In addition to Sindhu's success, the men's doubles team of MR Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan also advanced, winning decisively against Malaysia's Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong with scores of 21-18, 21-10. Unfortunately, Malvika Bansod's campaign ended prematurely as she lost to Pornpawee Chochuwong 12-21, 10-21. In men's singles, Kidambi Srikanth faced an early exit after losing to Japan's Yushi Tanaka with scores of 19-21, 15-21.
In women's doubles, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand returned to the BWF World Tour after a break but were eliminated in the first round by Indonesia's Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Meilysa Trias Puspitasari, losing 14-21, 12-21. Later in the day, Lakshya Sen will compete in men's singles, while the promising mixed doubles duo of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, who reached the semifinals at the Singapore Open, will face China's Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui in their first-round match. Lakshya, who also made it to the quarterfinals last week, is set to play against local favorite and World No. 13 Alwi Farhan.
