Indian Doubles Shine Amid Singles Disappointments
On the penultimate day of the 2026 BWF Singapore Open, Indian badminton players experienced a blend of success and disappointment. The doubles teams celebrated as two pairs advanced to the semi-finals, while the singles competitors faced early exits. The renowned duo of Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty secured their spot in the semi-finals after a hard-fought quarter-final match against Malaysia's KANG Khai Xing and Aaron TAI, winning with scores of 19-21, 21-17, 21-13 over the course of one hour and five minutes. They are set to compete against South Korea's S.J. Seo and W.H. Kim in the semi-finals on Saturday (May 30). In mixed doubles, Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila also progressed to the semi-finals after their Malaysian opponents, CHEN Tang Jie and TOH Ee Wei, retired due to injury while trailing 16-18 in the first set. The Indian pair will face Japan's S. Hobara and Y. Shimogami next.

World No. 1 An Se Young brought an end to PV Sindhu's run in the tournament, defeating the two-time Olympic medalist in straight sets with scores of 21-17, 21-14 in just 48 minutes. This loss signifies that no Indian player reached the semi-finals in the singles events, as both Malvika Bansod and Unnati Hooda were eliminated in the opening round. Lakshya Sen, the last remaining Indian in the men's singles, also faced defeat, losing to Japan's Koki Watanabe in a tightly contested quarter-final. After dropping the first set 21-19, Sen managed to take the second set 21-15, but ultimately succumbed in the third set, which ended 21-15 in favor of Watanabe. Earlier in the tournament, Ayush Shetty and Srikanth Kidambi were eliminated in the first round, while HS Prannoy exited in the Round of 16.
