Glasgow, July 28: In a thrilling showdown, Georgia Munro-Cook from Australia clinched the decisive points, leading her team to a remarkable victory over Canada in the Women’s 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball at the Commonwealth Games. The match concluded with an overtime win, showcasing an exhilarating finish against the defending champions.

The game was a back-and-forth battle, with Canada managing to equalize at 10-10 thanks to a last-second shot from Elodie Tessier just before the buzzer.

Munro-Cook, who contributed six of Australia’s ten points during regulation, successfully converted both extra points needed to secure a 12-10 win in overtime.

“That was one of the most thrilling games I've ever participated in,” the 32-year-old athlete remarked on the official website. “They kept fighting back, but we maintained our lead, which was incredible.

“Canada is among the top teams here, and we truly demonstrated our capabilities today. This victory gives us immense confidence. I believe we can compete with anyone here, and we proved that.”

This match determined the runners-up position in Pool A, following England's third consecutive win against South Africa, having previously defeated both Australia and Canada.

Men's 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball Highlights

A similar narrative unfolded in the Men’s 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball, where Australia, the defending champions, triumphed over the 2022 silver medalists Canada with a score of 20-12. This victory secured their place as runners-up in Pool A, trailing behind England, who achieved a dominant 21-0 win against Kenya to secure the top position and a direct entry into the semifinals.

“We had supporters out there who weren't even Australians cheering for us,” said Eithen Leard from Australia. “Everyone loves rallying behind the Aussies - 'Aussie, Aussie, Aussie'. It’s fantastic to have our family and friends here.

“I mentioned to one of my teammates at breakfast that there are only three more days left, and that made me a bit sad. But we’re determined to make the most of the next three days and see how far we can advance.”

Other Notable Performances

In Pool B, the defending Men’s 3x3 Basketball champions England faced a tough challenge from an unbeaten Malaysia before securing their fourth consecutive victory with a close score of 21-19.

Meanwhile, New Zealand also achieved their fourth straight win in the Women’s competition, defeating the host nation Scotland 21-12.

“We needed that win,” stated Ella Fotu from New Zealand. “Scotland is a strong team, and the crowd was great. We must stay sharp and improve with every game. Our goal is to be number one. Why else are we here if not to claim the top spot?”
