Assam Government Honors Boxer Lovlina Borgohain with ₹30 Lakh Reward

GUWAHATI, Aug 13: The sports minister of Assam, Biswajit Daimary, announced on Wednesday that the state will reward boxer Lovlina Borgohain with ₹30 lakh in recognition of her silver medal achievement at the recent Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow.

During a felicitation event organized by the Assam Amateur Boxing Association (AABA) in Guwahati, Daimary expressed pride in Lovlina's accomplishments, stating, “We are immensely proud of Lovlina Borgohain for her remarkable achievements in major global sporting events. As a token of our respect, the Assam government will grant her ₹30 lakh.”

Additionally, the minister revealed that an annual budget of ₹12 lakh has been allocated to the Lovlina Borgohain Boxing Academy located in North Guwahati.

“In response to Lovlina's request for assistance, we have decided to support her academy to nurture more young talents from our state into champion boxers,” he added.

Lovlina expressed her gratitude towards the sports minister and the Assam government for their unwavering support.

Reflecting on her journey, Lovlina shared her feelings about her early days in boxing, emphasizing that she always felt welcomed regardless of her performance. She expressed joy over adding a Commonwealth medal to her existing collection of Olympic, Asian, and World Championship medals.

“I am thankful to the government for their continuous support. This financial aid for my academy will be beneficial in many ways. I had been seeking assistance for the academy, and I appreciate the prompt response to my request,” stated the 75-kg boxer.

Various organizations, including the AABA, Assam Olympic Association, Assam Football Association, Assam Weightlifting Association, Assam Sepak Takraw Association, and Assam Kho Kho Association, also honored Lovlina for her achievements.

Lovlina has now completed her medal collection across the Olympics, World Championships, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games, making her the only athlete from Assam to achieve this remarkable feat.

The event saw attendance from notable figures such as AABA president and former minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya, AABA general secretary Hemanta Kumar Kalita, and Assam Olympic Association general secretary Lakhya Konwar, among others from the state's sports community.

Furthermore, the Assam government presented an indoor sports facility in the Rani area to the boxing federation, along with an outer field at the same site and another ground in Dhakuakhana to the Assam Football Association.

Lovlina's recent success adds another significant milestone to her career, having now secured medals at the Olympics, World Championships, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games. Her achievements have established her as one of the most distinguished athletes from Assam.

The Glasgow Commonwealth Games represented another pivotal moment in Lovlina's career, as she continued her streak of medal-winning performances at the highest level. This silver medal further solidifies her consistency on the international sports stage.
