Assam Boxers Shine at National Championships in Greater Noida

The Elite Men and Women National Boxing Championships in Greater Noida showcased a mix of triumphs and challenges for Assam boxers. Lovlina Borgohain advanced to the finals in her category, while Ankushita Boro and Gitimoni Gogoi secured bronze medals. The event, featuring around 600 competitors, marks a historic first for simultaneous men's and women's championships at the same venue. Mixed Results for Assam Boxers


Guwahati, Jan 10: The Elite Men and Women National Boxing Championships held at Gautam Buddha University in Greater Noida saw Assam boxers experiencing a blend of success and disappointment on Friday.


Lovlina Borgohain secured her spot in the finals of the 70-75 kg category by defeating Imroz Khan from Uttar Pradesh with a score of 5:0.


On the other hand, Ankushita Boro and Gitimoni Gogoi faced setbacks in the semifinals of their respective categories, both settling for bronze medals. Ankushita was defeated 5:0 by Priya from Railways, while Gitimoni lost by the same score to Sneha from All India Police.


In notable matches, Jadumani Singh, a silver medallist from the Boxing World Cup Finals, triumphed over 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Amit Panghal with a 5:0 victory in the men’s 50 to 55 kg semifinal, setting up a final against Pawan Bartwal, who also won his semifinal 5:0 against Victor Singh from Manipur.


In the women's events, world champion Minakshi from All India Police defeated Malika Mor from Madhya Pradesh 5:0 in the 45 to 48 kg category. Nikhat advanced to the finals of the 48 to 51 kg category after a 4:1 split decision win over Kusum Baghel from Uttar Pradesh, while Preeti secured her place in the 51 to 54 kg final with a 5:0 victory against Aarti Dhariyal from Uttarakhand.


In the men's competitions, Sachin overcame Punjab’s Bhupinder Singh in the 55 to 60 kg category, and Hitesh Gulia defeated Rajasthan’s Vivek in the 65 to 70 kg class. Abhinash Jamwal, Sumit, and Narender also advanced to the finals in their respective weight classes.


This championship marks the first occasion where both men's and women's National Championships are being conducted simultaneously at the same venue, featuring approximately 600 boxers competing across 10 weight categories each.
