Fils Secures Victory at Barcelona Open

Barcelona [Spain], April 19: Arthur Fils demonstrated remarkable composure as he overcame a late surge from Andrey Rublev, winning the final of the Barcelona Open with a score of 6-2, 7-6(2) at the ATP 500 clay-court tournament on Sunday.

The French player seemed on track for a straightforward victory, establishing a 5-2 lead in the second set and even serving for the championship at 5-3. However, Rublev ignited a comeback, taking advantage of a double fault from Fils to break back and narrow the score to 5-4.

Fils had three championship points on Rublev's serve but couldn't convert them, as the 28-year-old Russian rallied to win five consecutive points, leveling the set at 5-5.

The momentum shifted further when Rublev broke again to take a 6-5 lead. Nevertheless, Fils responded immediately, breaking back to force a tie-break, where he regained control and finished the match with seven consecutive points, marking his first title since Tokyo 2024.

Reflecting on the match, Fils admitted, “It was tough. The end of the second set was all about mental pressure. I played well for a set and a half, but when it came time to close, I started to feel the pressure. However, I’m very pleased with how I handled the tie-break.”

Fils initially showed signs of nerves in the final, losing his serve in the first game. Yet, the 21-year-old quickly found his rhythm, outlasting Rublev in baseline exchanges and applying consistent pressure from the back of the court, winning six consecutive games to claim the first set.

With this victory, Fils has climbed four spots to No. 25 in the ATP Live Rankings and is poised to become the French No. 1 for the first time since September 2025, replacing Arthur Rinderknech.
