Arthur Fery Shocks Wimbledon with Semi-Final Spot Against Zverev!
Wimbledon Semi-Finals: A Historic Run for Arthur Fery
London: British wildcard Arthur Fery has made headlines by advancing to the semi-finals of Wimbledon, where he will face French Open champion Alexander Zverev. This remarkable achievement follows Marta Kostyuk's victory, setting up a women's semi-final against Linda Noskova on Wednesday.
Ranked 114th in the world, Fery triumphed over Roland Garros runner-up Flavio Cobolli with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (7/4), 6-0, marking him as the first Wimbledon wildcard to reach the men's semi-finals since Goran Ivanisevic's title win in 2001. Fery is now just two wins away from matching Ivanisevic's feat and becoming the first British man to claim the Wimbledon title since Andy Murray in 2016. "Every match just keeps getting better. It's unbelievable," Fery expressed to his enthusiastic supporters, who filled Centre Court with excitement.
Notably, Fery is among the lowest-ranked players to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals since 1985, following world number 237 Vladimir Voltchkov in 2000 and world number 125 Ivanisevic in 2001.
On the other side, Zverev secured his place in the semi-finals with a convincing 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 win over sixth seed Taylor Fritz, ending a seven-match losing streak against the American. This marks Zverev's first semi-final appearance at Wimbledon, having previously never advanced beyond the last 16 in nine attempts.
"I’m thrilled to be in the semifinals, especially against Taylor, whom I hadn’t beaten in two years," Zverev remarked. He is now the third German man in the Open era to reach the last four in all Grand Slam tournaments, joining the ranks of Boris Becker and Michael Stich, the last German to win Wimbledon in 1991.
"It feels like a dream to finally perform well at Wimbledon; I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time," he added. As the 29-year-old Zverev prepares for his match against Fery on Friday, he is expected to be the favorite, with either reigning champion Jannik Sinner or Novak Djokovic awaiting in the final.
