Bournemouth, May 20: Manchester City’s aspirations for the Premier League title came to an end after they managed only a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth, resulting in Arsenal being crowned champions.
Arsenal has secured the Premier League title for the 2025/26 season, marking their first championship win in 22 years. This victory comes after three consecutive seasons of finishing as runners-up, including a narrow defeat to Manchester City in the 2023/24 season by just two points.
Heading to the South coast, City knew that only a win would keep their title hopes alive. In a match filled with quality, Guardiola’s team created numerous chances, including an Antoine Semenyo goal that was disallowed for offside, according to Manchester City reports.
However, a goal from Junior Kroupi in the 39th minute put City in a challenging position. Erling Haaland managed to score deep into injury time, offering a glimmer of hope.
Despite this, time was not on their side, and City’s quest for a seventh title under Guardiola ended at this crucial stage of the season.
City started the match energetically, showcasing their quality against a formidable opponent.
The first chance came within five minutes when Jeremy Doku fired a low shot that Bournemouth's goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic expertly saved.
Antoine Semenyo, returning to his former club for the first time since his January transfer, found the net in the 13th minute after connecting with a precise pass from Erling Haaland, but was ruled offside by a narrow margin.
City then breathed a sigh of relief when Evanilson missed a golden opportunity, sending a shot over the bar from just six yards out following Tavernier’s cross.
He later redeemed himself by blocking a goal-bound shot from Haaland during a corner taken by Doku.
City continued to press forward, with Omar Mamroush brought on to spark a late comeback.
Bournemouth, motivated by the prospect of securing European football for the first time in their history, also pushed for more goals.
The Cherries nearly extended their lead when substitute David Brooks struck the post in the 91st minute.
In a dramatic turn, Rodri hit the post with just 90 seconds remaining, allowing Haaland to score from the rebound, setting up a thrilling finish.
Ultimately, the draw was insufficient to stop Arsenal from claiming the title, denying City the chance to add to their Carabao Cup and FA Cup victories.
