Revamping Sports Facilities in Aranjuez

The City Council of Aranjuez has initiated the renovation of four pickleball courts located at the Municipal Sports Centre to cater to the increasing popularity of the sport in the area. As reported by local sources, these upgraded facilities are expected to meet professional standards and will be inaugurated on May 9.

This project aims to enhance courts that were originally built on an existing sports surface, following a proposal from the Aranjuez Tennis Club. The current phase, which is being executed in partnership with the club and the Madrid Tennis Federation, involves a comprehensive renovation to fulfill the technical specifications necessary for competitive play. The municipality is investing €6,800 plus VAT to fund this initiative.

Ignacio Benéitez, the Sports Delegate for the city, stated, "Pickleball is experiencing rapid growth and increasing demand, so this renovation will provide us with appropriate facilities and help promote the sport in Aranjuez."

The newly upgraded courts will serve both regular users of the municipal sports complex and newcomers interested in trying out the sport, as local authorities aim to establish pickleball as a significant part of Aranjuez’s sports offerings. A decision regarding user fees for the facility is anticipated at an upcoming council meeting.

The official opening on May 9 will feature an open house event for residents, aimed at introducing the sport and encouraging participation among various age groups. Additionally, the Aranjuez Tennis Club will organize a public tournament with four categories: men's open, women's open, mixed doubles, and a youth category for players under 16.

José Luis Cabezuelo, president of the Aranjuez Tennis Club, remarked, "Thanks to the collaboration between the City Council, the Madrid Tennis Federation, and the Aranjuez Tennis Club, we will have courts ready for competition and enjoyment for all enthusiasts."

This development highlights the ongoing growth of pickleball across Europe, with local governments increasingly investing in infrastructure to support its swift rise.
