Anjum Chopra Celebrates India's Historic Women's World Cup Victory
India's Remarkable Achievement in Women's Cricket
Former Indian cricketer and captain Anjum Chopra praised the Indian women's team for their historic victory in the ICC Women's World Cup, recalling fond memories of their outstanding performance. On November 2, India made history by defeating South Africa by 52 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, successfully defending a target of 299 runs. This win marked India's first World Cup title in both ODI and T20 formats.
This triumph comes after two previous losses in the World Cup finals in 2005 and 2017, as well as numerous efforts by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to promote women's cricket in the country, including equal match fees with the men's team and the launch of the Women's Premier League (WPL). Speaking to reporters during the FICCI Turf 2025 - 15th Global Sports Summit, Chopra expressed her deep connection to this World Cup victory.
Chopra reflected, "This moment remains special for me. Whenever I watch that reel or video on my phone, the players currently in the spotlight, Harman's catch, the semifinal victory, and our first win all come back to me as pleasant memories. It was tough when India lost three consecutive matches, but defeating Australia in the semifinal made people say we should be happy. However, championships are only for the winners. Although I wasn't playing, I still feel very close to this World Cup, and I tell people that I am a world champion."
Chopra described the WPL as a significant step for female players and a fantastic tournament for those looking to embrace and progress in the sport. She added, "The WPL has proven to be a major advancement for women cricketers. There has been considerable improvement among Indian players from the first to the second season, although not drastically. It's not just about making a leap as a player, but about moving in the right direction. This World Cup win has been the biggest change in women's sports. We have been striving for this recognition, and this is just the beginning; the reward we received is very special. I consider the WPL an excellent option for players to embrace the sport and make progress."
