Russell's Retirement and New Role

Venky Mysore, the CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), revealed that the decision to release star all-rounder Andre Russell was made by the franchise's owner, Shah Rukh Khan. Russell announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on November 30 and will take on the role of 'Power Coach' for KKR starting in the 2026 season.

Despite retiring from the IPL, Russell plans to continue playing in T20 leagues globally and will remain involved with other Knight Riders teams. Throughout his IPL career, he participated in 140 matches, amassing 2,651 runs, including 12 fifties, and took 123 wickets, with one five-wicket haul. Russell debuted in 2012 with the Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) before joining KKR in 2014, securing two titles in 2014 and 2024, and earning the IPL MVP award twice in 2015 and 2019.

Financial Considerations for Russell's Release

In an interview with ESPNCricinfo, Mysore discussed the financial implications of releasing Russell, who was retained at Rs 12 crore before the last IPL season. He explained that the management was exploring various options, and releasing Russell allowed them to gain Rs 18 crore in their budget. Although Russell's contract was worth Rs 12 crore, releasing him freed up Rs 18 crore, which was crucial for the upcoming auction on December 16.

"I wish there were no auctions every year because it can be quite stressful, and sometimes decisions have to be made that are not ideal. However, we ultimately decided that releasing him was necessary," Mysore stated. He emphasized that many people overlooked the fact that releasing Russell actually provided a larger financial benefit to the team.

Emotional Farewell

Mysore expressed that parting ways with Russell was a bittersweet experience, as he had never been through an auction before. He described Russell as an emotional individual who realized how deeply connected he was to the KKR franchise. "It was a strange feeling for both of us. He is very sensitive and easy to communicate with. After our conversation, he reflected on his time with KKR and how much it meant to him," Mysore shared.

Mysore recalled their close relationship, stating, "Over the past 11 years, I have probably spoken to Dre more than I have with my wife. We supported him during tough times, including a year-long anti-doping ban in 2017, and he always appreciated the franchise's support."

Retirement and New Opportunities

Mysore noted that it is rare for cricketers to feel they are finished with their careers. He mentioned that Russell, who will be 38 by the time the 2026 IPL season arrives, recognized that age and physical demands could impact his performance. "The conversation about retirement came up, and he considered it seriously. He felt it was time to embrace this new chapter," Mysore explained.

Shah Rukh Khan's Influence

When Mysore informed Shah Rukh Khan about Russell's contemplation of retirement, Khan suggested that he should indeed retire. Mysore observed that Russell seemed relieved after making the decision, noting his impressive performance in other leagues, including a recent match where he showcased his skills.

"After deciding to retire, he appeared more relaxed and engaged in his new role. I jokingly reached out to him, asking how he was adjusting to being the power coach, and it seems he has embraced it wholeheartedly," Mysore concluded.

The Concept of 'Power Coach'

Mysore admitted that the idea of appointing Russell as a 'Power Coach' was spontaneous. He explained, "We discussed what role would suit him best, and I realized that his ability to finish games and his experience made him an ideal candidate for this position. The title reflects his unique skills and contributions to the team."

Russell was pleased with the title, and Mysore noted that it was a first-of-its-kind role, emphasizing the importance of communication and mentorship for players in similar positions. "Russell's insights into high-pressure situations are invaluable, and we look forward to his contributions in this new capacity," he added.
