Andre Russell Announces IPL Retirement, Embraces New Role with KKR
Andre Russell Bids Farewell to IPL
On Sunday, November 30, former West Indies all-rounder and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) icon, Andre Russell, declared his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL). This announcement comes just ahead of the mini auction scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi.
Russell, who played for KKR for 12 seasons starting in 2014, was unexpectedly released by the franchise prior to the IPL 2026 Auction. The 37-year-old had a disappointing performance in IPL 2025, scoring only 167 runs at an average of 18.56 and taking 8 wickets with an average of 27.13 and an economy rate of 11.14 over 13 matches.
With KKR aiming to revitalize their squad after a lackluster season, Russell's departure opens up opportunities to recruit new all-round talent ahead of IPL 2026.
Russell's Emotional Retirement Announcement
In a heartfelt video shared on social media, Andre Russell confirmed his retirement from the IPL, expressing gratitude to KKR fans. He stated that while he will no longer participate in the IPL, he intends to continue playing in various leagues worldwide.
"Hello, KKR fans. Dre Russ here. I’ve made the decision to retire from the IPL. I will still be active in other leagues and for all the other KKR franchises. I have cherished memories from my time in the IPL, including hitting sixes and winning games," he shared.
Russell emphasized that he wanted to retire while still at the top of his game, leaving behind a legacy rather than fading away. He remarked, "It's best to retire when fans are asking 'why?' instead of 'you should have done it years ago.'"
New Role as 'Power Coach' for KKR
Despite retiring from the IPL, Andre Russell will remain with the Kolkata Knight Riders in a new capacity as 'Power Coach.' In this role, he will mentor the team's all-rounders and younger players, sharing his extensive experience to help KKR strengthen their squad for the upcoming seasons.
Russell's retirement has stirred emotions among KKR fans, who took to social media to reminisce about his significant contributions to the franchise over the past 11 years. Many fans expressed their gratitude for his unforgettable performances and loyalty to the team.
