Amit Mishra Advocates for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in 2027 World Cup Squad
Support for Rohit and Virat
Amit Mishra, a former Indian cricketer, has expressed his strong belief that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should be included in the squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027. He emphasized that no other players in the team can manage pressure as effectively as they do, making them ideal mentors for younger players. Following their retirement from Test cricket in May, both Rohit and Virat have seen limited action in ODIs, a format that has become less prominent in the cricket calendar. Despite their impressive performances throughout the year, concerns linger about whether their reduced playtime will affect their performance as they age, especially with both players nearing their 40s by the time the tournament arrives.
Pressure Handling Expertise
In a recent interview, Mishra highlighted the significance of having experienced players like Rohit and Virat in the team. He stated, "They should definitely be part of the squad. Their track record speaks for itself. While performance may fluctuate during bilateral series, big tournaments require seasoned players who excel under pressure. They not only manage stress well but can also exert pressure on opposing teams. Their ability to mentor younger players is unmatched."
Impact of Their Presence
Mishra, who took 156 wickets in 68 international matches, noted that the presence of Rohit and Virat would greatly benefit younger players and the captain, Shubman Gill. He remarked, "They will guide and support the younger players and the captain in various aspects. Even if they don't score heavily, their mere presence can be influential. However, seniority should be earned through performance, not just reputation. While they may not score centuries every match, their consistent impact is crucial. Their presence puts pressure on the opposition, knowing they can change the game at any moment."
Performance Statistics
This year, Rohit and Virat have been the leading run-scorers for India in ODIs. Virat accumulated 651 runs in 13 innings, averaging 65.10 with three centuries and four fifties, his highest score being 135 and a strike rate exceeding 96. Rohit closely followed with 650 runs in 14 innings, averaging 50.00, including two centuries and four fifties, with a top score of 121*.
Importance of Domestic Cricket
After a stellar performance in the first ODI against South Africa, where he scored 135 runs off 120 balls, Virat mentioned his belief in mental preparation over extensive practice. Mishra commented on the necessity of playing domestic cricket for seasoned players like Rohit and Virat, stating, "Playing more matches enhances physical fitness and mental resilience. If there are four league matches, they could participate in two and rest. Regular play is essential, especially since they focus on one format. Even during my career, I was advised to play a couple of domestic matches to maintain rhythm and physical condition, ensuring adequate match practice."
Upcoming Domestic Competition
Both Virat and Rohit are set to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, a domestic 50-over tournament, representing Mumbai and Delhi, respectively. The tournament is scheduled to commence on Wednesday.
