Akash Deep Reflects on His Breakthrough Tour in England
A Memorable Tour Experience
Indian fast bowler Akash Deep credits his successful tour of England to a supportive coach and captain, describing the experience as surprisingly smooth. With a remarkable 10-wicket haul in one match and a crucial half-century in another, he has quickly risen to prominence in the cricketing world. Reflecting on his performance, he recalls head coach Gautam Gambhir's encouraging words after his innings at the Oval.
Gambhir told him, 'You don’t even realize your potential. I’ve always believed you can achieve this. Maintain this level of dedication.' Akash, now 29, expressed gratitude for Gambhir's unwavering belief in him, both as a batsman and bowler.
Having debuted under Rohit Sharma and now playing for Shubman Gill, Akash finds the transition seamless, praising Gill's calm demeanor and strategic mindset. 'He’s not a novice captain; his IPL experience is invaluable,' he noted.
Akash felt at ease under Gill's leadership, stating, 'It didn’t feel like my first time playing. His support makes a significant difference, especially during tough moments.' He previously played under Gill in the Duleep Trophy, which helped ease the adjustment.
Despite this being his first tour in England, Akash noted that the pitches resembled sub-continental conditions, lacking the expected movement for fast bowlers. 'The wickets didn’t behave like the traditional English ones we’ve heard about,' he explained.
He adapted his bowling strategy, focusing on fuller lengths rather than the typical seam and swing. 'You have to adjust based on the conditions, and experience helps with that,' he added.
Akash also emphasized the importance of practice and visualization in his preparation. 'During nets, I might bowl to Yashasvi, but my strategy is for Duckett or Root,' he shared.
Addressing concerns about his fitness after missing matches in Australia and England due to minor injuries, he stated, 'Injuries are part of the game. You can’t hesitate to dive for a boundary. My goal is to minimize fitness-related injuries.'
So far, Akash has played 10 Tests, taking 28 wickets. When asked about his future in different formats, he mentioned, 'I haven’t received specific guidance. My focus is on performing well and being ready for any call-up.'
Before heading to England, Akash faced a personal challenge as his sister was diagnosed with cancer. Upon returning to India, he visited her in Lucknow. 'She was thrilled to see me. The treatment is tough, but following my journey kept her spirits up,' he said.
He also celebrated a personal milestone by purchasing his dream luxury SUV. Reflecting on his journey from playing tennis ball cricket in Durgapur to professional cricket, he remarked, 'I’ve always focused on improving my skills daily. Cricket is my passion, and that remains my priority.'
While he enjoys his new car, he acknowledges that material possessions are fleeting. 'Seeing my family happy brings me joy, but my true focus is on cricket and self-improvement,' he concluded.
