Ajit Agarkar Seeks Tenure Extension as India's Cricket Selector Until 2027 World Cup

Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of India's men's senior selection committee, is seeking an extension of his tenure until the 2027 ODI World Cup following India's successful T20 World Cup defense. His leadership has seen India win multiple ICC trophies, but the team's Test performance has raised concerns. As discussions unfold within the BCCI regarding his request, the cricketing community is keen to see how this will impact the future of Indian cricket, especially with notable retirements among veteran players.

Agarkar's Ambitious Request

New Delhi: Following India's successful defense of their T20 World Cup title, Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the men's senior selection committee, has reportedly requested an extension of his term until the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Agarkar, who has held the position since June 2023, had his contract renewed prior to the IPL 2025 season, thanks to India's remarkable performances, which included winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

According to a report from a leading news source, a former Indian cricketer has approached the board to extend Agarkar's tenure following the recent T20 World Cup victory.

The report indicates that the BCCI is currently deliberating on this request, with whispers suggesting that another former Indian cricketer from the West Zone is a potential candidate to take over, although no definitive actions have been taken yet.

Under Agarkar's leadership, India has clinched three significant ICC trophies: two T20 World Cups and one Champions Trophy. However, the team's Test match performance has been less impressive, marked by consecutive home series losses and a defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy overseas.

This disparity between formats has somewhat muted the excitement generated by India's dominance in white-ball cricket, where they have lost only two out of 33 matches and secured the Asia Cup titles in both 2023 and 2025.

Agarkar's time as chairman has also seen significant transitions, with seasoned players like Rohit Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Virat Kohli announcing their retirements from various formats. While Sharma and Kohli continue to play in ODIs, Ashwin has stepped away from all international cricket.
