Ajinkya Rahane Steps Down as Mumbai Captain Ahead of New Domestic Season
Ajinkya Rahane's Leadership Transition
As the Indian domestic cricket season approaches, commencing with the Duleep Trophy on August 28, veteran cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has made a significant decision regarding his future. On Thursday, he announced his resignation from the captaincy of Mumbai's domestic cricket team, paving the way for emerging players.
At 36, Rahane has been a key figure in Mumbai cricket for nearly 20 years, having captained the team for three seasons. He steps down ahead of the 2025-26 domestic season after leading Mumbai to their 42nd Ranji Trophy title in the 2023-24 season, ending a nine-year wait for the prestigious trophy.
His latest achievement as captain was winning the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last year, where he excelled as the tournament's top scorer with 469 runs, averaging 58.62 across nine matches.
A New Era for Mumbai Cricket
In a post on his X account (formerly Twitter), Rahane expressed that 'it’s the right time to groom a new leader.' Despite stepping down from the captaincy, he will continue to play for Mumbai, aiming to secure more titles in domestic competitions.
He stated, "Captaining and winning championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honour. With a new domestic season ahead, I believe it’s the right time to groom a new leader, and hence I’ve decided not to continue in the captaincy role."
Rahane emphasized his commitment to performing at his best as a player and looks forward to the upcoming season.
Rahane's Impressive Stats
Ajinkya Rahane ranks as the second-highest run-scorer for Mumbai in first-class cricket, accumulating 5,932 runs, which includes 19 centuries and 23 fifties, with an impressive average of 52.03 in 76 matches. In List A cricket, he is third among Mumbai's leading run-scorers, with 1,906 runs, featuring 4 centuries and 10 fifties at an average of 45.38 in 53 matches.
As a captain, Rahane brought a sense of calm and discipline to the team, fostering young talent while guiding Mumbai to several domestic titles, including the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Future Leadership for Mumbai
Mumbai cricket boasts a wealth of talent capable of stepping into leadership roles, with potential candidates including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Shams Mulani, Sarfaraz Khan, and Tanush Kotian. Prior to Rahane's captaincy, Prithvi Shaw led the team to the Ranji Trophy final in 2021-22 and secured the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2020-21.
Given their extensive experience in international cricket, Jaiswal and Iyer are strong contenders for the captaincy. However, selectors may also consider consistent domestic performers like Mulani or Khan for long-term leadership. Jaiswal's commitments to national duties and a busy international schedule could complicate his ability to lead throughout the domestic season.
Ultimately, the decision for Mumbai's next captain will likely come down to Shreyas Iyer, Shams Mulani, or Sarfaraz Khan.
