Ajinkya Rahane Faces Fine for Slow Over-Rate in IPL Clash Against CSK
Rahane Penalized for Over-Rate Violation
Chennai: Ajinkya Rahane, the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, has been fined ₹12 lakh due to his team's slow over-rate during their recent match against Chennai Super Kings in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday.
According to a statement released by the IPL, "Kolkata Knight Riders Captain Ajinkya Rahane has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 22 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Chennai Super Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai."
This penalty was imposed as it was the first offense of the season for his team under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which addresses minimum over-rate violations.
In the match, Chennai Super Kings secured their second victory in the IPL, moving up to four points from five matches and landing in eighth place in the ten-team standings. Noor Ahmad (3-21) and Anshul Kamboj (2-32) were instrumental in this win, sharing five wickets.
Chennai, batting first, set a competitive target of 192/5. They maintained control throughout the match, restricting KKR to 160/7 in their 20 overs, despite a late effort from Ramandeep Singh, who scored 35 runs, and Rovman Powell, who remained unbeaten at 31.
KKR made changes to their opening pair, with Sunil Narine partnering Finn Allen instead of Rahane. Narine started aggressively with a couple of sixes, but Allen was dismissed cheaply, giving CSK an early advantage.
Narine's innings ended prematurely as he fell to pacer Khaleel Ahmed during the Power-play, leaving KKR struggling at 36/2, marking their lowest total after the powerplay since 2024. Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi tried to stabilize the innings, briefly increasing the scoring rate with a mix of boundaries.
Despite Ramandeep Singh's top score of 35 and Rovman Powell's contribution of 31 not out, KKR's efforts fell short.
Earlier, CSK's innings was led by Sanju Samson, who scored a fluent 48, while young Ayush Mhatre provided a quick start with a 17-ball 38. Dewald Brevis added a solid 41 in the middle overs, helping CSK recover after a brief slowdown.
Despite the efforts of KKR's bowlers, particularly Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy, CSK's aggressive start proved crucial.
This victory marks CSK's second consecutive win, while KKR continues to struggle with their batting consistency and remains without a win.
