Agnimitra's Journey to Pickleball Stardom

Agnimitra Bhattacharya, who once envisioned a future in tennis, dedicated six hours daily for seven years to perfect her game and build her endurance. However, her path took an unexpected turn. Now, as a pickleball player, she is focused on making her mark on the international stage. Her commitment to pickleball has been remarkable, highlighted by her golden hat-trick at the Kolkata Open in May, where she triumphed over Indian Pickleball League star Shreya Chakraborty in the women's singles final.

Selective in her tournament choices on India's PWR circuit, Agnimitra is gearing up for the Monsoon Pickleball Championships in Nashik this July. She is also eager to compete internationally, having made her PPA Tour Asia debut in Kuala Lumpur in May. Her next challenge is the China Open 1, a PPA Tour Asia 500 event scheduled for June 17-21.

A Remarkable Comeback

What sets Agnimitra apart is her strong foundation in tennis, a sport she had to abandon in 2021 due to a severe spine injury. "I fractured my spine, affecting both L4 and L5 muscles, and was advised to stop playing entirely to protect my future," she shared. After years of rigorous training in Pune, where her family supported her tennis ambitions, the injury forced her to step away from the sport.

During her four-year hiatus, she explored her passion for music by playing the drums, but the longing for sports never faded. "Last year, while in Bombay, I felt homesick and needed to engage in something active. I told my mom we should find a sport to play," she recounted. Initially considering badminton, she stumbled upon a pickleball court nearby and decided to give it a try. Her tennis background allowed her to adapt quickly, impressing coaches with her skills.

Despite initial fears of re-injury, Agnimitra focused on her fitness with the help of trainers and coach Sourav Panja, gradually regaining confidence on the court. She believes that while pickleball is less physically demanding than tennis, it requires strategic thinking. "It's a game of the mind, and I excel in that aspect," she noted.

Aiming for the PPA Tour

Her success at the Kolkata Open, the largest pickleball event in eastern India, has solidified her status as a promising young talent. Agnimitra is determined to maintain her momentum and is now a participant in the PPA Tour Asia. At the upcoming China Open 1, she will compete in women's singles and team up with Paranya for women's doubles and Colin Wong for mixed doubles. "This is my second PPA event, and I'm fortunate to be in all three categories, despite the challenges of waitlists and partner selection," she explained.

As she prepares for her next competition, Agnimitra is committed to improving her performance after a first-round exit at the Kuala Lumpur Open. "My coach pushes me every day, and I dedicate three to four hours to training and fitness. I aim to make a name for myself in the top 10 globally," she expressed.

Missing the World Cup Trials

Unfortunately, Agnimitra will miss the selection trials for the Pickleball World Cup as she plans to extend her stay in China. The Picklebay Zonals - North, which will serve as the senior selection trials, are scheduled for June 24-28. Despite this setback, she remains hopeful about competing in the women's singles category as an individual player. Her long-term goal is to secure a deal with the Indian Pickleball League and UPA, which oversees the PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball. "I missed the IPBL last year due to my injury, but I'm excited about this year's opportunities," Agnimitra concluded.
