Achraf Hakimi to Face Trial in Rape Case: Court Confirms
Court Decision on Achraf Hakimi's Case
A French appeals court has ruled that Achraf Hakimi, the Moroccan football star currently representing his country at the World Cup, will go to trial regarding a rape allegation. This decision was confirmed by his legal team on Friday. The defender, who recently celebrated his second consecutive Champions League victory with Paris Saint-Germain, had previously appealed a ruling from February that recommended he face trial based on public prosecutors' advice.
The Versailles appeals court's announcement came just before Morocco's Group C match against Scotland, following their opening game which ended in a 1-1 draw against Brazil. Hakimi, recognized as one of the top right-backs globally, has denied all allegations against him. The case stems from a complaint made by a 24-year-old woman who accused him of raping her at his residence in a Paris suburb back in March 2023.
Rachel-Flore Pardo, the attorney for the plaintiff, expressed that after enduring over three years of legal challenges and public scrutiny, the court's ruling offers her client a sense of relief and hope. She stated, "This decision signifies that she has been acknowledged by the justice system and will have her case presented in court." Pardo also emphasized the importance of this trial in addressing sexual violence, particularly in the realm of men's football.
In a statement shared on X, Hakimi remarked that his case might not have progressed if he were not a public figure, suggesting he has become an "easy target". He reflected on his experience, stating, "Justice looked me in the eye and told me: If you were not famous, there would never have been a case.' I have chosen to remain silent for years, believing that patience and dignity would lead to the right outcomes." He expressed that the ongoing situation has adversely affected him and his family, and he is eager for the trial to commence, stating, "I have been waiting for this trial since the first day. And I am now waiting for it impatiently. Finally, I will be able to speak." The trial date has yet to be set.
Hakimi's lawyer, Fanny Colin, criticized the proceedings, asserting that the numerous exculpatory elements revealed during the investigation would typically result in the dismissal of such cases. She lamented that the inconsistencies and misleading statements from the complainant were not adequately addressed, highlighting issues regarding her credibility and the investigation's integrity.
