Aaron Rai Shines at Valspar Championship While Theegala Faces Challenges
Rai in Top 10, Theegala Struggles at Valspar
Aaron Rai kicked off the week with an impressive 3-under 68, placing him T-7 on the leaderboard at the Valspar Championship, where he is tied with nine other competitors.
In contrast, Theegala encountered a tough start, finishing the first round with a score of 6-over 77, landing him at T-128, making it a steep climb to qualify for the next round.
Rai began his day strong with a birdie but fell to 1-over par by the turn due to bogeys on the sixth and seventh holes. However, he rebounded on the back nine with three consecutive birdies on holes 10, 11, and 12, and added another birdie on the 17th, concluding the day at 2-under 68.
After a disappointing performance at the Players Championship last week, Rai is eager to improve.
Theegala's round was marred by an early double bogey on the second hole, followed by five additional bogeys. His only highlight was a birdie on the 14th hole amidst a challenging round.
Sungjae Im Takes Lead, Snedeker Close Behind
Sungjae Im currently leads the tournament with a remarkable 7-under 64, despite encountering two late bogeys. The South Korean golfer, returning from a wrist injury, is participating in only his third event of the year and has yet to make the cut this season. His first round featured six birdies, two eagles, and three bogeys.
Im showcased his putting skills, sinking long putts of 18 feet and 35 feet for his two eagles.
Brandt Snedeker, the captain of the US team for the Presidents Cup, is in second place, just one stroke behind the leader. Snedeker achieved his first bogey-free round in 14 years, finishing with a score of 6-under 65, which included six birdies.
