Aaliya Ebrahim Triumphs Over Mihika Yadav to Claim Open Women's Singles Title
Aaliya Ebrahim's Remarkable Comeback
Just days after experiencing heartbreak in a bronze medal playoff against fellow Indian pickleball player Mihika Yadav at the BIDV Cup in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Aaliya Ebrahim found herself back on home turf at the Picklebay Zonals - North in Gurgaon. This time, Aaliya turned the tables, emerging victorious to secure the Open Women's Singles title. After losing the first game 6-11, she showcased her determination by winning the next two games 11-6 and 11-4, demonstrating exceptional shot-making and court coverage.
This significant victory comes at a pivotal moment, as it precedes the selection of India's senior team for the upcoming Pickleball World Cup, scheduled to take place in Da Nang, Vietnam, from August 30 to September 6. The Picklebay Zonals - North served as the selection trials for senior players. Following the conclusion of the Junior Pickleball Championship in Ahmedabad, the Indian Pickleball Association had previously announced the sub-junior and junior teams.
Aaliya's chances of making the national squad have greatly improved after her impressive win over Mihika, a dominant player in the domestic circuit and a seasoned competitor on the PPA Tour Asia.
A Dream Opportunity
The 25-year-old is now focused on her aspiration to join the Indian team, with the final decision resting with the IPA's selection committee. "This tournament is a fantastic opportunity created by the IPA and Picklebay, allowing athletes to compete and earn a spot in the World Cup. It would be a tremendous honor if I get that chance," she expressed.
Despite her triumph, Aaliya was quick to commend Mihika, acknowledging her as a formidable opponent. "Winning feels incredible. Mihika is an excellent player, and I'm just thrilled to have come out on top," she remarked.
Mastering the Mental Game
Given Mihika's reputation as a strong competitor in women's singles, the mental aspect of the match was anticipated to be challenging for Aaliya. However, she approached the game with a calm mindset, treating it like any other match. "I stepped onto the court thinking of her as just another opponent. I believe that mindset helped me succeed," she stated.
Aaliya downplayed her earlier defeat to Mihika at the BIDV Cup, refraining from labeling her win at the Picklebay Zonals - North as a comeback. Instead, she emphasized her preparation for the rematch, which ultimately proved beneficial. "Every time I compete, my goal is to win. I entered the match with that mentality, and having faced her recently allowed me to devise a game plan that worked in my favor," Aaliya concluded.
