Chopra Discusses Team India's World Cup 2027 Reserves

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra shared insights regarding the reserves for Team India ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027. He highlighted a potential competition between opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and middle-order batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad. Chopra's comments came during an episode of JioHotstar's 'Follow the Blues', as India gears up for a three-match ODI series against the West Indies starting September 27. This series will see the return of ODI stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Ruturaj Gaikwad has been included in the squad to replace Shreyas Iyer, who is participating in the Asian Games 2026 in Japan. Additionally, Dhruv Jurel has been selected as a backup wicketkeeper over Rishabh Pant, following an impressive Test series in Sri Lanka where he scored a century and a half-century. Yashasvi Jaiswal is also part of the lineup.

Aakash Chopra on World Cup Reserves

During the show, Aakash remarked on the selection of reserves for the World Cup, stating, "You need to consider who can be taken as reserves. There’s a competition between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad, both of whom have performed well when given the chance. I see an opportunity for one of them to step up. Auqib Nabi, who has received his first ODI call-up for the West Indies series, has been with the team for a while but hasn't yet played. If he gets a chance, I’m eager to see how he performs."

In his six ODIs for India, Jaiswal has accumulated 285 runs at an impressive average of 71.25, including two centuries, with a top score of 116*. He has also been a key player in Tests, amassing 2,612 runs in 31 matches at an average of 47.49, featuring seven centuries and 13 fifties.

Ruturaj, on the other hand, has had limited opportunities in ODIs, scoring 228 runs in nine matches at an average of 28.50, with one century and one fifty. He achieved his first ODI century against South Africa last year while substituting for an injured Iyer. His List-A statistics are remarkable, with 5,334 runs in 104 matches at an average of 58.61, including 21 centuries and 20 fifties.

Chopra's Expectations from Rohit and Kohli

Aakash expressed his expectations from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as the series approaches, stating, "With the World Cup just a year away, I believe that if Rohit and Kohli perform well, they will contribute significantly to winning matches and possibly trophies. Therefore, my only expectation from them is to keep scoring runs."

In ODIs this year, Virat has scored 384 runs in six innings at an average of 64.00, with a strike rate exceeding 106, including one century and three fifties. Rohit has had a mixed year, accumulating 379 runs in nine innings at an average of 42.11, with a century and a fifty, his best score being 138 against England at Lord's.

Chopra Comments on Pant's ODI Future

Regarding Rishabh Pant's exclusion from the squad, Aakash noted that despite Pant's significant role in Test cricket, he has only played one ODI since recovering from a road accident in 2024. He emphasized that Pant's captaincy of the Rest of India (ROI) team for the Irani Cup indicates his importance in the Test format, but in white-ball cricket, he seems to have been sidelined.

"Rishabh Pant is a unique case. While he is a crucial player in Tests, he has lost his vice-captaincy and has been excluded from ODIs without playing. However, his captaincy in the ROI team shows that he is still valued in red-ball cricket. For white-ball formats, it appears the selection committee has made a decision," he stated.

In his 31 ODIs, Pant has scored 871 runs in 27 innings at an average of 33.50 and a strike rate of 106.21, including one century and five fifties. His absence due to injury allowed KL Rahul to secure the wicketkeeper-batter position, and Rahul has continued to excel in various roles.

All-Rounder Spot Controversy

Aakash also discussed the competition for the all-rounder position, particularly with Ravindra Jadeja returning to ODIs after missing previous matches against Afghanistan and England. He mentioned that from a World Cup perspective, one among Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Jadeja will likely miss out, making it crucial for Jadeja to seize this opportunity.

"A significant highlight was bringing Nitish Kumar Reddy from the Asian Games to play here. If Hardik Pandya is unavailable, they need someone who can bowl pace and bat effectively. Jadeja must take wickets and score runs, as his fielding has always been a strong point. However, not all three all-rounders will make it to South Africa, so each player must capitalize on their chances," he concluded.

Since 2025, Jadeja has participated in 13 ODIs, scoring 149 runs in 10 innings at an average of 29.80, with a best score of 32. He has also taken 12 wickets at an average of 45.17, with his best figures being 3/26. In his last ODI series against New Zealand, he scored 43 runs in three innings, with a top score of 27, but did not take any wickets.
