Starlink Moves Closer to Launching in India

New Delhi: Elon Musk's Starlink is on the verge of its long-anticipated commercial launch in India, as the company has now revealed its residential pricing on its official website.

The satellite internet service will cost Rs 8,600 per month, with new users required to buy a hardware kit priced at Rs 34,000.

This residential plan allows users to evaluate the service quality in their locality before making a long-term commitment, featuring unlimited data and a 30-day trial period.

Starlink highlights its plug-and-play installation, over 99.9% uptime, resilience to extreme weather, and absence of data caps, aiming to attract customers in areas where traditional broadband is unreliable.

While the residential pricing is now available, the company has not yet disclosed the costs for its business-tier services. Starlink is anticipated to announce its complete commercial offerings as discussions with government officials progress.

Recent recruitment efforts by the company suggest an increase in operational activities in preparation for the launch. By the end of October, SpaceX listed four job openings in Bengaluru: Payments Manager, Accounting Manager, Senior Treasury Analyst, and Tax Manager, indicating a broader international expansion strategy.

Previously, the Maharashtra government signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited to collaborate on providing satellite internet services for government entities, rural areas, and essential public infrastructure in remote and underserved regions, including aspirational districts like Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Dharashiv, and Washim.

The signing of the LoI took place in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the state's Information Technology Minister, Ashish Shelar.

Chief Minister Fadnavis expressed his enthusiasm on social media, stating, "It was wonderful to welcome Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Starlink, in Mumbai, where the Government of Maharashtra signed an LoI with Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited, making Maharashtra the first Indian state to officially partner with Starlink. Elon Musk's Starlink is a leading player in the ICT sector, boasting the largest fleet of communication satellites globally. We are honored to have the company entering India and collaborating with Maharashtra."
