Odisha's Green Energy Initiative

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is setting its sights on becoming a leading "green energy hub" by the year 2036, as stated by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday. This announcement came during the inauguration of the three-day Global Energy Leaders' Summit 2025 (GELS 2025) held in Puri.

The Chief Minister emphasized the state's commitment to significantly decrease its dependence on fossil fuels by 2036. He also pointed out the importance of investments in the energy sector to guarantee a reliable electricity supply, particularly in rural regions, highlighting that power is essential for self-sufficiency and empowering the youth.

Majhi called on other states to focus on enhancing energy production and conservation efforts.

GELS 2025 serves as a collaborative platform for central and state governments, industries, researchers, and global experts to develop a sustainable and clean energy roadmap.

Additionally, CM Majhi reiterated Odisha's dedication to achieving India's target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, with a strong emphasis on renewable energy within the state's industrial policies.

Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair participated in the summit via video link, stressing that effective energy transitions necessitate ongoing collaboration among governments, which is a primary goal of GELS 2025.

Deputy Chief Minister K V Singh Deo, who oversees the energy department, mentioned that Odisha aims to promote extensive renewable energy use in both industry and agriculture by 2030. He envisions the state becoming a center for clean energy, manufacturing, and green hydrogen by 2036, coinciding with its centenary. Singh Deo also referenced the Konark Sun Temple as a testament to India's historical relationship with energy.

The summit saw participation from notable figures, including Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood, Rajasthan Energy Minister Heera Lal Nagar, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, and Energy Department Principal Secretary Vishal Kumar Dev.
