India Emerges as a Global Smartphone Export Hub: A Look at the Numbers
Smartphone Exports Surge in India
New Delhi: According to Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, smartphones have become the leading export category for India, with international shipments reaching USD 30 billion in 2025.
The minister announced this milestone via a social media update.
Vaishnaw emphasized, "We are becoming the global hub for smartphone manufacturing."
The post highlighted that smartphone exports totaled USD 30 billion from January to December 2025.
In the previous fiscal year, mobile phone production in India was valued at Rs 5.5 lakh crore (approximately USD 60 billion), with exports from this sector amounting to around Rs 2 lakh crore (about USD 22 billion).
Electronics exports from India surpassed Rs 4 lakh crore (USD 44 billion) in 2025, with further growth anticipated as four semiconductor plants are set to commence operations this year.
Neil Shah, Co-Founder and VP of Research at Counterpoint, noted that Apple has become a significant player in India's manufacturing landscape, particularly after the US imposed tariffs on China, leading to record-high exports from India.
Shah projected that India would produce nearly 30 crore mobile phones, with an estimated one in four smartphones manufactured in the country being exported in 2025.
The premium market in the USA, driven by brands like Apple, Samsung, and Motorola, is a major export destination, contributing to the highest export values ever recorded.
As per the International Data Corporation's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker for Q3 2025, Apple achieved its highest quarterly supply of 50 lakh iPhones for the domestic market.
Apple dominates both the premium (smartphones priced between Rs 53,000-71,000) and super-premium segments (priced above Rs 71,000), significantly contributing to the growth of India's smartphone market in the September quarter.
