Foxconn's New Venture in India


New Delhi: The Bengaluru facility of Foxconn, a major player in electronics manufacturing, has officially started producing the iPhone 17 on a limited scale, according to insiders familiar with the situation.


This factory, located in Devanahalli near Bengaluru, is Foxconn's second-largest manufacturing site globally and represents an investment of approximately USD 2.8 billion (around Rs 25,000 crore).


Sources indicate that the Bengaluru unit has begun operations alongside the existing production of iPhone 17 at Foxconn's Chennai facility.


Despite an earlier disruption caused by the sudden departure of numerous Chinese engineers, Foxconn has successfully recruited specialists from various regions, including Taiwan, to fill the void.


Reports suggest that Apple aims to ramp up its iPhone production in India to 60 million units this year, a significant increase from the 35-40 million units projected for 2024-25.


In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, Apple manufactured 60% more iPhones in India, valued at an estimated USD 22 billion.


During a financial results announcement on July 31, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that a majority of iPhones sold in the US in June 2025 were produced in India.


Cook also stated that all iPhones sold in the US during the June quarter would be shipped from India.


An analysis by S&P Global highlighted that iPhone sales in the US reached 75.9 million units in 2024, with March exports from India totaling 3.1 million units, indicating a pressing need to either enhance production capacity or redirect shipments intended for the domestic market.


Apple's supply chain in India saw a 21.5% annual growth, reaching 5.9 million units in the first half of 2025, with the iPhone 16 being the most shipped model during this timeframe.


In the second quarter, Apple's iPhone supplies in India increased by 19.7% year-on-year, achieving a 7.5% market share in the Indian smartphone sector.


According to IDC, the overall smartphone market in India during the June quarter was dominated by Vivo, which secured a 19% market share.
