Exploring the Hidden Treasures of Baleshwar's Marine Microalgae for Future Health Solutions
Baleshwar's Coastal Biodiversity: A Potential Goldmine
Baleshwar's coastline, celebrated for its picturesque landscapes, is also home to a diverse range of marine life that may hold promise for future pharmaceutical and cosmetic innovations. Researchers are currently investigating marine microalgae sourced from Talasari and other coastal areas of Odisha for their antimicrobial, antioxidant, and UV-protective capabilities.
A total of 58 distinct microalgae species have been cataloged from various sites along Odisha's extensive 480-kilometer coastline, stretching from Talasari to Gopalpur in Ganjam district. This research initiative is spearheaded by the Department of Biotechnology at Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanja Deo University in Baripada, where scientists are analyzing natural pigments and UV-absorbing substances found in these microorganisms. Their primary focus is on potential applications in natural sunscreens and skin-care products.
In addition to studying the antioxidant properties of these microalgae, researchers are exploring bioactive compounds that may contribute to cancer research and drug development. However, they emphasize that it is premature to label these algae as a definitive treatment for cancer. The ongoing research aims to identify bioactive substances with medicinal potential, but any therapeutic use will necessitate extensive laboratory studies, preclinical evaluations, and clinical trials.
The microalgae collected from various coastal locations are being cultured and preserved at the Algal Repository within the university's Department of Biotechnology in Baripada. Under the guidance of Professor Biswajit Rath, PhD candidates Satyabrata Dash and Sabyasachi Parida are actively participating in this study. The outcomes of this research could pave the way for further exploration of marine resources in the fields of pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and biotechnology. However, additional scientific validation will be essential to ascertain whether these compounds can be transformed into viable commercial or therapeutic products.
