A major breakthrough has been achieved in cancer treatment. American pharmaceutical companies Moderna and Merck have released results from their Phase 3 clinical trials for a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine. This innovative vaccine has significantly reduced the risk of melanoma patients experiencing a recurrence of the disease or its spread to other parts of the body after surgery. Experts have hailed this as a pivotal development in cancer therapy.
Understanding the New Therapy
This therapy combines Moderna's personalized mRNA vaccine, known as 'intismeran,' with Merck's immunotherapy drug, 'Keytruda' (pembrolizumab). The vaccine is tailored to the patient's tumor. After surgery, a sample of the tumor is analyzed to identify specific mutations (neoantigens), allowing for the creation of an mRNA vaccine that instructs the immune system on how to target cancer cells.
The entire process takes about six weeks. The vaccine is administered alongside Keytruda, enhancing the body's immune response.
Trial Results Overview
The Phase 3 trial, named INTerpath-001, involved 1,137 high-risk melanoma patients who had already undergone surgery and were at a heightened risk of cancer recurrence.
The results indicated that:
- Patients receiving the vaccine in combination with Keytruda had a significantly lower risk of cancer recurrence compared to those receiving only Keytruda.
- The risk of distant metastasis was also reduced.
- In a five-year follow-up from a previous Phase 2 trial, there was nearly a 49% reduction in the risk of recurrence or death.
The company claims this is the first successful Phase 3 trial for any personalized cancer vaccine.
Mechanism of Action
Unlike traditional vaccines that prevent infections, this vaccine aids in eliminating remaining cancer cells post-treatment. Its personalized nature allows it to be effective for each patient's specific tumor. Experts believe this approach could eventually be applied to other cancers, including lung, bladder, kidney, and pancreatic cancers.
Future Prospects
Comprehensive results are yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal. The therapy will only be available to the general public following regulatory approval. While melanoma is relatively rare in India, the expansion of this technology to other cancers could benefit patients in the country.
Doctors assert that this success opens new avenues in the fight against cancer. This shift towards personalized treatment could save many lives in the future. However, the wait for final approval and long-term data continues.
