Apple Enters Indian Payment Landscape

New Delhi: Apple, the renowned American tech giant, has officially launched its Apple Pay service in India, partnering with Axis Bank, as announced on Wednesday.

This innovative payment solution is accessible to users of Apple devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches, with Mac support expected to follow soon.

Jennifer Bailey, Apple's Vice President of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, expressed enthusiasm about the launch, stating, "India boasts a vibrant, tech-savvy population that is increasingly moving towards a cashless economy while demanding top-notch security and privacy. We are thrilled to introduce Apple Pay to Indian users today."

With Apple Pay, users can complete transactions at retail locations, within applications, and online without needing to enter PINs or OTPs during checkout.

Customers holding Visa and Mastercard credit cards issued by Axis Bank can easily integrate their cards into Apple Pay, allowing them to shop at numerous physical and online retailers throughout India, as well as anywhere that supports NFC payments.

Users can add their debit or credit cards via the app to facilitate payments.

When utilizing Apple Pay, the actual card numbers are not stored on the device or on Apple's servers, nor are they shared with merchants. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is generated, encrypted, and securely stored in the Secure Element, a certified chip designed to protect payment information on the device.

Additionally, Apple does not retain transaction details.

If a user's iPhone is misplaced or stolen, they can utilize the Find My app to locate, lock, or suspend payments from that device.

At its launch, Apple Pay will be accepted by millions of merchants across India, including Apple Store locations, Blinkit, Chaayos, Comet, Croma, Interflora, Ixigo, Le15 Patisserie, Reliance brands, Tata 1mg, Zomato, and many others.

Apple has collaborated with various Payment Service Providers (PSPs) such as Cashfree, JusPay, Mswipe, Paytm, PayU, Pine Labs, Razorpay, and Worldline to integrate Apple Pay into their merchant networks in India, with plans to expand the number of participating merchants and applications over time.

Currently, Apple Pay is operational in over 90 countries and regions, partnering with more than 11,000 banks and networks globally.
