Growing Semiconductor Ecosystem in India

Mumbai: On Friday, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, announced that 68 Japanese firms are currently working on their manufacturing and research strategies in India as part of Semicon India 2026.

During his visit to the Japanese pavilion at the event, Vaishnaw noted that over 30 nations are involved in Semicon India 2026, indicating a rising global interest in India's semiconductor sector.

He stated, "At the Japanese pavilion, 68 companies are in the process of finalizing their manufacturing, research, and partnership plans in India."

Vaishnaw also emphasized the excitement among the youth at the semiconductor event, pointing out that India's semiconductor initiative is generating high-skilled job opportunities and nurturing a talent pool for the industry.

He showcased a semiconductor chip created by students from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela in Odisha, developed under India's Semiconductor Mission's talent development program. The students had previously presented their work to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The student-designed chip was revealed to the media during Vaishnaw's discussion.

Odisha's Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, expressed pride in seeing indigenous chip designs from NIT Rourkela displayed alongside Made-in-India semiconductor chips at Semicon India.

Majhi remarked that this achievement is a source of pride for Odisha, showcasing the state's talent, innovation, and research capabilities.

He attributed India's ongoing advancements in establishing a robust and self-sufficient semiconductor ecosystem to the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and the efforts of Vaishnaw.

The Chief Minister congratulated the scientists, researchers, and the entire NIT Rourkela team, highlighting that Odisha's talent is playing a significant role in India's semiconductor journey and its broader technological self-reliance goals.
