Mizoram's Aizawl Railway Link Awaits Vande Bharat Trains
Introduction of the Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line
New Delhi, July 16: The newly completed Bairabi-Sairang railway line has successfully connected Mizoram's capital, Aizawl, to the national railway network. However, the introduction of Vande Bharat trains on this route will be delayed for several months.
Officials have indicated that the broad gauge line is not yet electrified, which means only diesel engines can operate on it.
According to a representative from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), "Vande Bharat trains are electric and can only run on fully electrified tracks. Other express or mail trains can utilize diesel or electric locomotives based on the specific route requirements."
Despite this, the line can still be inaugurated using diesel locomotives for services like the Rajdhani Express or other passenger trains.
“The state government is actively engaging with the Railway Ministry to launch the route with the Rajdhani Express,” the official noted.
Currently, electrification work is progressing swiftly from Badarpur in Assam to Sairang, with completion expected by October or November.
This new railway line, stretching 51.38 km, is not only an engineering achievement but also offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
The NFR is also planning to introduce Vistadome coaches on this route.
"Passengers will have the unique opportunity to glide through the Reiek Hills, witness the Vantawng Falls, and traverse the eerie forests near Tam Dil Lake, all while enjoying the comfort of their plush train seats," the NFR stated in a press release.
Furthermore, Sairang, the terminal point of this railway line, is located just 20 km from Aizawl along the banks of the Serchhip River. Once a quiet town accessible only by narrow, winding roads, Sairang is poised to become a key entry point in Mizoram's burgeoning tourism sector.
Officials have also mentioned plans to extend the railway line towards the Myanmar border, approximately 232 km from Aizawl.
"This future expansion will not only enhance regional trade but also strengthen security along a sensitive border. It represents a significant project that will improve cross-border connectivity for India in the Indo-Pacific region," the release concluded.
