Innovative Use of Cow Dung: A Sustainable Business Model
The Significance of Cow in Hinduism
In Hinduism, cows are revered not merely as animals but as maternal figures. The cow holds a significant place in this faith, with its dung and urine considered beneficial. Many individuals are capitalizing on cow dung, turning it into a profitable business venture.
Shiv Darshan Malik's Eco-Friendly Initiative
Dr. Shiv Darshan Malik from Haryana has pioneered a project that enables people to construct eco-friendly homes using cow dung. He is producing cement, paint, and bricks from cow dung and inspiring others to follow suit. Malik has trained over 100 individuals in this innovative approach.
From Teacher to Entrepreneur
Coming from a farming background, Shiv Darshan was once a college lecturer. However, he left his teaching career a few years ago to focus on creating building materials from cow dung. His efforts have led to an impressive annual income of 5 to 6 million rupees. He has also established a training center in Bikaner, charging a fee of 21,000 rupees for his courses.
Inspiration from Abroad
Malik's motivation for promoting eco-friendly homes stemmed from his travels to the USA and England, where he observed similar initiatives. Upon returning to India, he implemented these ideas.
Benefits of Cow Dung Homes
One of the notable advantages of homes built with cow dung is their temperature regulation; they remain cool in summer and warm in winter. Malik was the first to utilize this method, which gradually gained popularity among his neighbors.
Expanding Business Reach
His business has gained traction in Haryana and has expanded to several states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh. Through the marketing of 5,000 tons of cement, along with sales of paint and bricks, he generates an annual revenue of around 6 million rupees.
Eco-Friendly Cement Production
Malik has also shared his formula for creating eco-friendly cement from cow dung, which includes gypsum, guar gum, clay, and lemon powder. This product is referred to as 'Vedic Plaster.'
