Tensions Rise Between Himachal Pradesh Government and Central Authorities

MANDI/SHIMLA:

In a significant escalation of conflict between the Himachal Pradesh government and the central administration, state Cabinet Minister Anirudh Singh has openly challenged Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. He has urged Gadkari to visit Himachal Pradesh to understand the situation before defending the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

This statement from Anirudh Singh comes in the wake of serious accusations against him regarding an alleged assault on NHAI officials, which he has firmly rejected as 'baseless and politically motivated.'

During a press conference in Shimla, the minister criticized the NHAI, labeling it as 'one of the most corrupt institutions in the nation.' He claimed that its negligent construction practices have led to numerous fatalities, extensive damage, and significant hardship for local residents.

Minister Accuses NHAI of Disrespecting Locals

“The NHAI disregards elected officials, fails to respond to emergencies, and shows no concern for public welfare,” Anirudh Singh stated. “Their personnel have mistreated local residents, including women. When confronted, they resort to filing false allegations.”

In a direct challenge to the central government, he asserted, “A minister based in Delhi cannot grasp the realities of our mountainous region. Nitin Gadkari should come here to witness the devastation firsthand before making judgments about the NHAI's actions.”

Assault Allegations and Minister's Defense

Anirudh Singh is facing scrutiny for allegedly assaulting NHAI Manager Achal Jindal and another official during a dispute at a construction site. However, he has dismissed these claims as 'fabricated and politically motivated.'

“The officials who allege they were assaulted did not seek medical attention. There are no medical records to support their claims. They even informed the SHO present that nothing occurred. What changed later?” he questioned, implying that the FIR was an attempt to divert attention from the NHAI's shortcomings.

He noted that over 150 individuals, including forest officials, local residents, and the SDM, were present during the incident. “The conflict arose due to the NHAI officials' misconduct towards locals, not the other way around. If anyone should be held accountable, it’s them,” he asserted.

Call for National Policy on Construction-Related Damages

Using the controversy as a platform, Anirudh Singh advocated for a national policy to establish accountability for damages caused by highway construction, particularly in ecologically sensitive areas like Himachal Pradesh.

“How many homes have been lost? How many individuals have received compensation? Who is tracking this?” he asked. “We require a transparent and accountable relief and rehabilitation framework — not just empty promises and monetary settlements.”

Accusations of Corruption and Demand for Action

The minister did not hold back in accusing a 'deep nexus' between NHAI officials, contractors, and the central government, which he claims has resulted in rampant corruption and reckless construction practices.

“This issue transcends compensation,” Anirudh Singh emphasized. “You cannot assign a monetary value to human lives and community suffering.” He called for immediate action on all pending FIRs against the NHAI in Himachal Pradesh, warning that “no one, regardless of their power, will escape accountability if found guilty.”

He also criticized Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, questioning his actions during last year’s floods. “Which affected areas did he visit? It’s easy to make statements from a distance. True leadership involves being present with the people during crises.”

Anirudh Singh confirmed that he has been summoned by the Chief Minister and plans to meet him soon. He also intends to travel to Delhi to personally discuss the matter with Nitin Gadkari.
