Understanding the Death of Lord Krishna

Lord Krishna is revered as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe. While many are aware of his divine role, few ponder the circumstances surrounding his death.

Let's explore the timeline and events leading to the demise of Lord Krishna. The tale of Krishna's avatar is well-known, as he manifested during the Dvapara Yuga. However, not everyone realizes that his death was a consequence of a singular deception from his previous incarnation as Lord Rama.

According to ancient texts, the cause of Krishna's death was rooted in the aftermath of the Mahabharata war, where the Kauravas faced defeat. Following the eighteen-day battle, when Yudhishthira was being crowned, Gandhari, mourning the loss of her sons, cursed Krishna, blaming him for the war's devastation. She proclaimed that just as the Kaurava lineage was obliterated, so too would Krishna's lineage face destruction.

The Annihilation of the Yadavas

The Mausala Parva of the Mahabharata narrates the events leading to Krishna's departure from his earthly form. This narrative reveals that Krishna's death occurred thirty-five years after the Mahabharata war. The effects of Gandhari's curse began to manifest in Dwarka, prompting Krishna to lead the Yadavas to the Prabhas region.

Upon reaching Prabhas, Krishna instructed the Yadavas to prepare for their impending fate by offering food to Brahmins. Shortly after, a conflict erupted between Satyaki and Kritavarma while discussing the war, leading to Satyaki, in a fit of rage, beheading Kritavarma. This ignited a civil war among the Yadavas, resulting in the deaths of Krishna's son Pradyumna and many others, leaving only Babhru and Daruka alive.

The Departure of Lord Balarama

After the Yadavas' destruction, Krishna's elder brother Balarama sat by the seashore, meditating and ultimately merging with the divine. Following Balarama's departure, Krishna was resting under a peepal tree when a hunter named Jara approached, mistaking Krishna's foot for a deer.

Without hesitation, Jara shot an arrow that struck Krishna's foot. Upon realizing his mistake, he was filled with remorse and sought forgiveness. Krishna reassured him, stating that this was the result of his past actions.

Krishna revealed to Jara that in his previous life as Lord Rama, he had hidden from Jara, who was then King Bali. Thus, he chose a similar fate in this life. Jara was granted a place in heaven for fulfilling Krishna's destiny.

The Final Farewell

After Jara's departure, Krishna's charioteer Daruka arrived. Krishna instructed him to return to Dwarka and inform everyone that the entire Yadava clan had been annihilated and that both he and Balarama were returning to their divine abode. He warned that Dwarka would soon be submerged.

Soon after, deities and celestial beings gathered to pay homage to Krishna. Following their worship, Krishna closed his eyes and ascended to his heavenly realm.
