Zubeen Garg Honored Posthumously with 'Sangeet Sudhakar' Title

Tezpur, August 1: The Asam Sahitya Sabha has awarded the title of ‘Sangeet Sudhakar’ posthumously to the late singer Zubeen Garg during a ceremony at Sangeetacharya Lakshmiram Baruah Sadan, in collaboration with the Nahar Sakha Sahitya Sabha from Guwahati.

During the event on Thursday, Dr. Basanta Goswami, president of the Sahitya Sabha, declared that all songs penned by Zubeen Garg will now be referred to as ‘Zubeen Sangeet’. He also mentioned that a compilation of his works, titled ‘Zubeen Garg Rachanavali’, will be published within the next six months.

“Today, we honor Zubeen Garg posthumously with the title of ‘Sangeet Sudhakar’ in recognition of his remarkable contributions to Assamese music, literature, and culture,” stated Dr. Goswami.

The family received the honor through Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, and his sister, Dr. Palmee Borthakur, while his father, Kapil Thakur, was unable to attend due to health issues.

The ceremony commenced with the lighting of a ceremonial lamp by the Sahitya Sabha president alongside Zubeen Garg’s family members, followed by a performance of Seero Senehi Mor Bhasa Janani... by artists from the Ganeshguri branch of the Sahitya Sabha.

In his keynote address, Debojit Bora, the principal secretary of the Sahitya Sabha, described Zubeen Garg as “not just a successful singer but a pioneer who transformed Assamese music into a new era.”

Bora emphasized that Zubeen Garg’s role in promoting modern Assamese music on a national scale was unmatched, asserting that his creative brilliance has enriched Assamese culture for over thirty years.

Padum Rajkhowa, the vice president of the Sahitya Sabha and guest of honor, remarked that Zubeen Garg would have felt deeply honored to receive this title, adding that his artistic legacy will endure.

Later, Garima Saikia Garg unveiled a book titled Zubeen Garg, which was compiled and edited by Prafulla Barman.
