Zimbabwe's Blessing Muzarabani Banned from PSL for Two Years
Muzarabani Faces Ban from PSL
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has imposed a two-year suspension on Zimbabwean cricketer Blessing Muzarabani, preventing him from participating in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) until 2029. This decision follows his withdrawal from Islamabad United, despite having signed a contract, to join Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). The PCB cited a 'fundamental failure to honour agreed-upon commitments' as the reason for this ruling, stating that his actions compromised the integrity of the league.
Official PCB Statement on the Matter
In an official statement, the PCB reiterated its dedication to maintaining high standards of professional conduct and the importance of contractual obligations within the HBL PSL. The board declared Muzarabani ineligible for the next two editions of the league, effective immediately, due to his failure to uphold his commitments, which undermines the league's professional framework.
Integrity of the PSL at Stake
The PSL emphasized that the league's integrity relies on the ethical behavior of all participants. They stated, 'Professionalism in franchise-based leagues necessitates that all parties act transparently and consistently. Engaging in conflicting commitments while bound by a prior agreement deviates from the expected standards of the sport. If such behavior goes unchecked, it jeopardizes the trust that franchises, regulators, and stakeholders place in professional dealings.'
Contractual Background and Similar Cases
Muzarabani was signed by the PSL shortly after the auction as a replacement for Shamar Joseph, following a mutual agreement to part ways with Islamabad United. His contract was valued at PKR 11 million (around US$40,000). Notably, he is not the only player to switch from PSL to IPL; Sri Lanka's Dasun Shanaka also faced a similar situation, having initially signed with Lahore Qalandars before joining Rajasthan Royals as an injury replacement for Sam Curran.
Muzarabani's Performance in IPL
In the current IPL season, Muzarabani has participated in two matches for Kolkata Knight Riders, achieving a notable four-wicket haul against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). However, he has not played since April 2.
