Zimbabwe to Host Australia for Historic ODI Series in September
Overview of the ODI Series
Zimbabwe Cricket has confirmed a three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against the Australian national cricket team, set to take place in September. This series marks the first ODI tour by Australia to Zimbabwe in over ten years.
Match Schedule and Location
The series is scheduled to kick off on September 15, with the subsequent matches taking place on September 18 and 20. All matches will be held at the Harare Sports Club, located in the capital city of Harare.
Significance of the Tour
This tour is particularly important as Australia last participated in an ODI series in Zimbabwe during a tri-nation tournament in 2014, which also included South Africa. For Zimbabwe, this series is a crucial part of their preparations for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027, which they will co-host with South Africa and Namibia.
Developmental Opportunities
Givemore Makoni, the Managing Director of Zimbabwe Cricket, expressed enthusiasm about hosting a top-tier team, calling the series a significant opportunity for the team's growth. He stated, "We are thrilled to welcome Australia back to Zimbabwe for what is expected to be a fiercely competitive ODI series. Matches of this level are essential for our development as a team," according to the ICC.
Makoni emphasized that the series would offer vital match experience as Zimbabwe prepares for the 2027 World Cup and allows local fans to enjoy high-quality international cricket. He added, "This is also a wonderful chance for our supporters to witness elite international cricket at home, and we anticipate strong attendance at Harare Sports Club."
Upcoming Matches
In addition to the ODI series against Australia, Zimbabwe is also scheduled to host the Indian cricket team for a T20I series in July, prior to the ODI matches.
