Zelenskyy's G7 Attendance: No Bilateral Meeting with Trump Planned

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is confirmed to attend the G7 summit in France, but notably, he will not have a scheduled bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump. This decision has raised concerns, especially given the ongoing war in Ukraine. While Trump plans to meet with several other world leaders, he will participate in a working session with Zelenskyy. The summit's focus appears to be shifting towards the Middle East, with discussions expected to center around the Iran conflict and security in the Strait of Hormuz, leaving Ukraine's situation in a precarious position.

Zelenskyy to Join G7 Summit Amid Concerns

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to participate in the upcoming G7 summit in France. However, he will not be included in the list of scheduled bilateral meetings with US President Donald Trump. A senior official from the US administration indicated that Trump intends to engage in one-on-one discussions with leaders such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, French President Emmanuel Macron, and heads of state from Qatar, the UAE, and Egypt during the summit, which runs from June 15 to 17. Notably, no meeting with Zelenskyy has been arranged, raising eyebrows given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In a briefing before the summit, US officials noted that Russian military advances appear to have largely stalled, emphasizing Washington's commitment to a swift resolution of the conflict. One official stated, 'We want the war to end as quickly as possible,' as reported by The Guardian. The lack of a dedicated meeting for Zelenskyy has sparked concerns, particularly as the summit's focus seems to be shifting towards the Middle East conflict.

Trump and Zelenskyy to Engage in Working Session

Despite the absence of a formal bilateral meeting, President Trump will engage in a working session with Zelenskyy during the G7 summit in France on Tuesday, according to a senior administration official. The first working session, which will address issues related to Ukraine, is scheduled for the following day. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed, 'President Trump will participate in a working session with G7 leaders and President Zelensky of Ukraine.'

This lack of a dedicated Trump-Zelenskyy meeting is particularly significant given the critical role the Ukraine conflict plays in Western diplomacy and the G7 agenda. While both leaders are expected to interact during the broader working session, the decision not to arrange a separate bilateral meeting contrasts sharply with Trump's plans to meet with several other world leaders at the summit. European nations are eager for the G7 to present a unified stance in support of Ukraine, yet the US has halted all bilateral military aid, leaving Europe to shoulder the majority of military and financial support. Additionally, Europe has been largely excluded from peace negotiations, despite Zelenskyy's calls for greater involvement from the continent. The summit's agenda is anticipated to focus more on the Iran conflict, the Middle East situation, and security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz.
