Youth Protests Erupt in Himachal Pradesh Over Job Trainee Policy
Growing Discontent Among Youth in Himachal Pradesh
Mandi-Kangra — A surge of protests led by the youth is currently sweeping through Himachal Pradesh, fueled by discontent over the state's contentious Job Trainee Policy. Demonstrations in the Mandi and Kangra districts have significantly eroded public trust in the government, with the Himachal Unemployed Youth Federation (HUYF) labeling the policy as a “mark of administrative failure and insensitivity.”
Shrey Awasthi, the State Coordinator for HUYF, issued a firm ultimatum:
“Should the Job Trainee Policy not be revoked immediately, we will initiate a large-scale protest in Shimla during the upcoming monsoon session. This is more than a protest; it will be a statewide youth uprising.”
The Federation argues that the policy has left young individuals feeling “mentally shattered and profoundly betrayed,” pointing to a history of policy reversals and exploitative practices.
“Rather than fostering dignified employment, the administration appears intent on institutionalizing exploitation disguised as training,” Awasthi remarked.
The protests, characterized by placards, chants, and impassioned speeches, highlight the increasing frustration among educated youth who feel relegated to precarious, contractor-like positions devoid of job security or benefits.
District Convenor Vishal Mandotra condemned the policy for compelling selected candidates to undergo two years of temporary training followed by another examination, describing it as “mental harassment.”
As the protests gain momentum across various districts, the state government faces mounting pressure to take decisive action or risk a political fallout. The Federation has presented a memorandum to the Chief Minister, demanding an immediate rollback of the policy and regular recruitment for long-standing vacancies.
The message from the youth of Himachal is unmistakable: they seek dignity, not mere tokenism. If the government fails to heed their demands, the streets will undoubtedly respond.
