Yogi Adityanath's Strong Words on Codeine Syrup Controversy: A Clash with Opposition Leaders
Uttar Pradesh CM Takes a Stand
Lucknow: On Monday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of Uttar Pradesh launched a fierce attack on the Opposition regarding the ongoing codeine cough syrup issue, making a pointed remark about two 'young' leaders, one based in Delhi and the other in Lucknow.
During his address in the Legislative Assembly, he dismissed claims of any fatalities in the state linked to codeine syrup and pledged to take decisive action against those involved in its illegal production and distribution.
"No fatalities have been reported from codeine cough syrup in Uttar Pradesh... There are two examples in the country, one in Delhi and another in Lucknow. Whenever discussions arise, they quickly leave the country," he stated, indirectly targeting Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition, and Akhilesh Yadav, the head of the Samajwadi Party.
The Chief Minister emphasized that stringent measures would be enforced under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against anyone engaged in the illicit trade, linking the syrup's licensing to the previous SP administration.
"The largest wholesaler, initially apprehended by the STF, received a license from the Samajwadi Party in 2016," he noted.
Yogi's comments came as Opposition members protested both inside and outside the Assembly, calling for a debate on the syrup issue.
In response, Akhilesh Yadav quickly countered the Chief Minister's statements with a twist.
He interpreted Yogi's remarks as an acknowledgment of two power factions within the BJP, framing it as a conflict between them.
Suggesting a power struggle between the BJP's central leadership and Yogi's administration, he warned that this internal discord should not be made public.
"Self-Acceptance! No one anticipated the Delhi-Lucknow rivalry escalating to this extent. Those in constitutional roles should uphold public decorum and avoid crossing lines of propriety. BJP members should keep their internal disputes private. If someone feels offended, you may need to reconsider your stance," he posted on X.
