Yashasvi Jaiswal: From Selling Golgappas to Cricket Stardom
The Inspiring Journey of Yashasvi Jaiswal
Hard work, dedication, and passion are the three key elements that can turn any dream into reality, regardless of one's financial status. Take the story of young cricketer Yashasvi Jaiswal, for instance. Once a golgappa vendor, he spent many nights hungry in a tent but never let these hardships deter him. Instead, he faced every challenge head-on, and his success story is sure to inspire many.
Leaving Home at Just 10 Years Old
Hailing from Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, Yashasvi comes from a humble background; his father runs a small shop while his mother is a homemaker. As the youngest in the family, Yashasvi harbored dreams of becoming a cricketer. To pursue this dream, he left home for Mumbai at the tender age of 10, with his father not stopping him due to their financial constraints.
Selling Golgappas on the Streets
In Mumbai, Yashasvi began working at a stall selling water-puri (golgappas) and fruits during the Ram Leela festival at Azad Maidan. Occasionally, he would play cricket with other boys, praying that none of his teammates would spot him at the golgappa stall, fearing embarrassment. He earned around 200-300 rupees a week by scoring runs in cricket.
Transforming His Life
While playing at Azad Maidan, Yashasvi often searched for lost cricket balls to earn some money. One day, coach Jwala Singh noticed his talent and offered him cricket coaching. Under his guidance, Yashasvi's skills flourished, and he became an exceptional cricketer, always grateful to his coach for his support.
A Fortuitous Encounter with a Cricket Legend
During a visit to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, Yashasvi befriended Arjun Tendulkar, son of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. In 2018, Arjun invited Yashasvi to his home, where he met Sachin, who was so moved by Yashasvi's story that he gifted him a bat, encouraging him to use it for his debut match.
Setting Records in Cricket
Yashasvi gained media attention when he scored a double century and three centuries, amassing 504 runs in five matches during the 2019 Vijay Hazare Trophy, becoming the youngest player to achieve this feat. He also hit 12 sixes in a single innings, a record yet to be matched. His remarkable performance in the Under-19 Asia Cup further showcased his talent.
In the 2020 Under-19 World Cup, he scored a century and four half-centuries, totaling 400 runs, earning the title of 'Player of the Tournament.' Consequently, during the IPL auction of 2020, he was bought by the Rajasthan Royals for 2.4 crores. Currently, Yashasvi is making headlines for his historic performances in the Irani Trophy, where he scored a double century in the first innings and a century in the second, etching his name in the record books.
