Yash Thakur's Aspirations for IPL 2026

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 approaches, Yash Thakur, a pacer for Punjab Kings and Vidarbha, is eager to replicate his domestic success in the lucrative league. He shared insights on how he draws inspiration from Indian cricket legends like Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah, particularly admiring Bumrah's exceptional skills in a batting-dominant era. Yash spoke to a news outlet ahead of PBKS's opening match against the Gujarat Titans, scheduled to start on March 31.

Yash enters the IPL following impressive performances in domestic competitions, where he emerged as Vidarbha's leading wicket-taker in both the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy. In the SMAT, he secured the position of the third-highest wicket-taker overall, claiming 18 wickets in seven matches with an outstanding average of 9.88, including a four-wicket haul and a five-wicket haul, with his best figures being 5/16. Despite his team's early exit from the group stage, they rebounded to clinch their first VHT title after finishing as runners-up the previous season. During that season, Yash took 19 wickets in nine matches, averaging 25.57, with two four-wicket hauls and best figures of 4/50, achieving his peak performance in the title match against Saurashtra.

Gaining Knowledge from Experienced Teammates

In his conversation, Yash emphasized the importance of learning death bowling techniques from seasoned teammates like Arshdeep, India's top T20I wicket-taker, and South African star Marco Jansen. He stated, "These players bring various bowling styles and techniques, allowing me to learn significantly from our pace attack. From Arshdeep, I've gained insights into the mindset required during the death overs, and the same goes for Marco Jansen. They both contribute in every match phase."

Yash also highlighted the importance of being versatile in bowling throughout the innings, whether during the powerplay, middle overs, or death overs.

Aiming for National Representation

Having previously represented India at the U19 level, Yash, like many aspiring bowlers, dreams of donning the national jersey and understands the dedication required to achieve that goal. He expressed admiration for Bumrah's ability to outsmart batters in a batting-friendly environment, stating, "To earn the India cap, hard work is essential at every stage. Performing well in domestic cricket and seizing opportunities in the IPL is crucial. Every delivery counts. Watching Jasprit Bumrah is inspiring; his unique bowling style and mindset offer valuable lessons for us. We strive to incorporate these learnings into our domestic and IPL performances."

Translating Domestic Success to IPL

Following a successful domestic season, Yash is determined to apply his strategies and execution in the IPL, aiming to play a pivotal role in his team's success. He remarked, "I had a fantastic season with Vidarbha in both the Syed Mushtaq and Vijay Hazare Trophies. The strategies I developed were beneficial, and I intend to implement them effectively in the IPL. My mindset remains focused on winning for my team, and I aim to help PBKS achieve victory and ultimately win the tournament."

Prepared for Increased Responsibilities

After participating in only two matches during last year's runners-up campaign, Yash is eager for more playing time and is committed to delivering his best performance. He stated, "I am always prepared for every match. Tactical decisions are made, and I am ready to contribute my utmost effort."

Despite limited game time with PBKS, Yash appreciates the supportive environment fostered by captain Shreyas Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting, which makes him feel like a vital part of the team. He noted, "Even though I played just two matches last year, I never felt like an outsider. I felt integrated into the team for every match. Ricky and Shreyas bhai have cultivated an atmosphere where everyone feels included and motivated to give their best for the team. We all share a common goal of progressing together, which contributes to our development."

Comparing Leadership Styles: Shreyas Iyer vs. KL Rahul

Having played under KL Rahul for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) during the 2023-24 season, where he took 24 wickets in 19 matches, Yash noted that both captains share a similar "trophy-winning mindset." However, he observed that KL exhibits a calmer demeanor compared to Iyer. He concluded, "Both Shreyas and KL are alike in their desire to win trophies; they are not satisfied with merely reaching the playoffs. Both are energetic and positive, but KL maintains a calmer presence, while Iyer displays more energy on the field."
