Beijing/ New Delhi, Sep 10: The Chinese Foreign Ministry has confirmed that President Xi Jinping will travel to India this weekend to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

According to a statement from the ministry, “At the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Xi Jinping will attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi from September 12 to 13.”

This announcement follows a media briefing in Beijing where a spokesperson, Guo Jia-kun, refrained from commenting on Xi's potential visit, stating, “I have no information to provide regarding the question you raised.”

Xi's upcoming visit is anticipated to be a crucial diplomatic event, especially as India and China aim to enhance their bilateral relations after the violent clashes in Galwan in 2020.

This will mark Xi's first trip to India in almost seven years, with his last visit occurring in 2019 for an informal summit with Modi in Mamallapuram, near Chennai.

As the current chair of BRICS, India will host the summit on September 12 and 13, amidst significant geopolitical challenges, including ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine. The summit is expected to serve as a vital forum for discussions on collaboration among BRICS nations.

Previously, Xi has visited India three times, starting in September 2014 during the initial terms of both leaders, where he engaged in extensive discussions with Modi. He returned in 2016 for the BRICS Summit in Goa and again in 2019 for the informal summit in Mamallapuram.
